MATTERS UNDER RULE-377

Title: Regarding establishment of a permanent regional bench of the Supreme Court at Chennai-laid.

DR.T. SUMATHY (A) THAMIZHACHI THANGAPANDIAN (CHENNAI SOUTH):

The establishment of a permanent regional Bench of the Supreme Court is very essential to provide ample opportunity for the poor and downtrodden to access the temple of Justice. Access to Justice is not the preserve of the rich, but the right of every person in this great nation. In a vast nation like India, poor people are literally cannot afford and also incapable of reaching the National Capital. New Delhi to pursue their legal options in the Supreme Court. Delegation from the Bar Councils of southern States i.e. Karnataka,Tamil Nadu,Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala met the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India and the Hon’ble Vice-president and gave their presentation for the creation of permanent Supreme Court Bench in South India.

At present, access to the Supreme Court is affordable to only those who have the financial capacity to reach and afford a lawyer at New Delhi. Therefore, a person who cannot afford, is left without an appellate remedy. Knowing the difficulty of poor people seeking justice, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has requested the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India to establish a permanent Regional Bench of the Supreme Court at Chennai. Therefore, I urge the Union Government to establish a permanent Regional Bench of the Supreme Court at Chennai.
