STANDING COMMITTEE ON COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION AND TECHNOLOGY 13.09.2020-12.09.2021

PERIOD 2020-2021:

DR.T. SUMATHY (A) THAMIZHACHI THANGAPANDIAN (CHENNAI SOUTH):

During this period, I was a part of the meetings and raised the following concerns during the various meetings:

  •  suspension of telecom and internet services and the associated socio-economic
    impact;
  • adoption of 5G technology in India and the challenges in adoption of the
    technology and road ahead;
  • functioning of Facebook in India and associated suggestions;
  • legal provisions in the cyberspace;
  • safeguarding citizens’ rights and prevention of misuse of social/online news media
    platforms including special emphasis on women security in the digital space;
  • surveillance using the Pegasus spyware;
  • digital divide and the issue of spectrum with DoT and Telecom Regulatory Authority of India;
  • Central Board of Film Certification and the Indian Cinematograph Act, 1952;
  • freedom of press and ethical standards;
  • propaganda and fake news;
  • Functioning of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

During the said period, I was also a part of the study tour undertaken by the committee from 03.09.2021 to 10.09.2021. We interacted with the Srinagar-Department of Posts,
Mumbai-Ministry of Information and Broadcasting/ CBFC/DDK/AIR, Hyderabad- Department of Telecommunications/BSNL, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Telecom
Circle Chennai-Department of Posts. We held discussions and on-site visits to understand various programs being implemented and their progress in terms of the infrastructure.
